Begedil (Deep Fried Potato Patty) -Mama's style

Begedil has always been part of the Tan's family favorite  recipe, my mum has mounded one of the best begedil in Singapore and some even say in Malaysia and Batam.

The main reason for the bagus and shiok shiok feeling when makan my mum's begedil is because the generous serving of ingredients in it, she always emptied at least 2 big cans of sardines along with a sack of good quality potatoes and mashed it up - so basically you are eating the potato patty with the sardines meat in it......
Then she put bawang (Malay word for onion), Chili padis (Malay word for small chillis) and spring onions (cue taken from Chinese cooking)

well most begedils you get in a typical Malay stall or at those nasi padang stalls are solely potatoes and nothing else in it.... the best you get is some vegetables in it.... and they are small in size - like mouth size (you look at my mum's begedil, you need at least 2-3 bites to chomp it up. haha)

So yesterday, my mum made begedil sardine again but this time round she done another variant where it is begedil beef (corn beef).
After we tried the latter at an Eurasia restaurant, we keep pestering her to make the same and that was the wisest choice we made because it is so damm good, she has attained an upper hand on the ones we had in the restaurant....
this morning I brought some for my colleagues and poor sardines, they have been dethrone by the beef.....

These are the beef variant and damm shiok
These are the sardines version.... the old favorites

I know, I know, both variants look similar and I too had a hard time to differential both of them unless I take a bite and be surprise by the filling in it... well isn't life full of surprises....

Prawn noodle.. An Asian Favorite dish throughout Southeast Asia

Prawn noodle is a dish that make most people gaga over and they are willing to pay top dollars for a bowl of it... usually a whopping $10 for a bigger size prawn (maybe 2 piece of it), a few slices of lean pork meat along with thin slices of fish cakes.... However what makes this dish yummy is actually the soup!!! Without that soup, it is just an usual mee pok dry type of dish...

Yes, the prawn broth is heavenly with a strong smell of 'swimming' crustaceans shells and 'heads' in it... The broth has to be simmered for a long period in order to achieve that kind of sweetness.....

Sadly, most hawkers opt for the "short cuts"... adding Monosodium glutamate (MSGs) or a whole bottle of dark soya sauce...This is why you would want to drink up a reservoir of  H2O right after a slip of that potent soup.....

Anyway, This evening I have the gourmet luck to eat my mum's Prawn noodle mee... the soup is wonderful as it was prepared since 7.30am in the morning.....and it is without those "Supplements' that I mentioned earlier.

Nothing beats a bowl of prawn soup couple with the noodles and sambal whipped up by your mum!!!!

This plate of prawn noodle certainly cost more than what you can find outside...It is priceless

Coconut Rice with its "side kicks"

My mum has been whipping up this local delicacy for years.. Each time, my family and I have been treat with a palace of food (mind you, my family is like 5 of us).

Anyway, I guess that my mum simply love to cook and her passion and mission in life is to ensure every of us enjoys our meal and eat to each's fill.....

The one that ruled its all... This is why this post is being created... The one coconut rice......
Fried Chili Ladies Fingers - fired with dried shrimp...
Sambal Ikan Billis...  homemade which is why its my favorite because it is spicy!!!
Homemade Fried wanton - This is nicely seasoned and it is juicy
This Otah is bought from Muar - the place where you can find the best Otah...
Fried Chicken Wings - nicely seasoned with sambal chicken... spicy wings!!
Fried onion egg - a very local home dish in Singapore

Home made chicken Cutlet. According to Mum, she has to remove the meat from the drumsticks.

I need to invest a big plate for future nasi lemaks. ‪#‎platetoosmalllah‬

Bee Hoon Mee Dry, 1 Bowl ah!!!!

Today's dinner - dad's cooked Bee Hoon Mee Dry... cooked on the spot and pipping hot... usually my mum does the cooking but she is away on an important mission -> Mahjong!

So Dad took over the reins... truly appreciated that, Dad.

Look at the sambal!! damm shiok man!!! soup full of ingredients....

Coconut noodle soup - The Laksa!! Peranakan style......

Often times, when someone ask for Laksa in Singapore... one would say Katong or Sungei Road areas....

Well credit has to be given when it is due.. they were once great Laksa dishes when their papas or grand papas were cooking... Fast forward to this age where passion overtaken by profit margins and globalization... they are simply riding on on the legacy left behind or the reputation that the one whom-started-it-all painstakingly build it up...

Anyway, nothing beats home cooked food because that is cooked with passion and lots of love...
ingredients are plentiful and you can always ask for another serving at anytime - now you know why I am fatboyjay... Haha

here is the photo of the laksa which my mum cooked from time to time along with the home made sambal (if you cannot eat spicy, please don't take a risk in it)

Enjoy slurping at the digitise laksa and shout Bo Jio!!!!

This is what I called a BOWL of Laksa

Birth

It's has been while since I last type a binary in the Blog space... that was when I was still a 26 years old chap, fresh from the university oven and into the corporate jungle...

Almost 10 years has passed, I have aged, experience has grown in proportionally with my fat tummy. :)

Well I had been a fat boy all this while except for the army days when I lost 30 kg within 2 months, maintained my ideal weight at 75KG for another 1.5 years then ballooned to rounded puffer fish size (110kg) now.

Haha... well I must say I am a Lazy bugger and certainly being well-fed by my mum all these years with her wonderful cooking and sedap Peranakan and Chinese dishes....

So here is the birth of this new blog... to pay tribute to my mother's cooking... I shall post photos of the dishes that had been cooked in recent years and shared with certain family recipes or lobangs.

Of course the coming dishes in the many years to come. So sit back and hit that refresh button to check on the yummy dishes.... and what my Facebook friends always said when I shared my food photos with them... you may shout "Bo Jio!!!!"
